A Little Art History Lesson for the Holidays

Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry by The Limbourg Brothers
1412-1416

This painting is part of a medieval book of hours depicting the month of February in the book's calendar section. Little is known about the Limbourg brothers, Paul, Hermann and Jean. The brothers were from Flanders and it is believed that they created many pieces, but most of them were lost.
The northern French renaissance image above is one of the first snow scenes ever depicted. The Limbourgs were trying to add a level of realism and naturalism not seen in other paintings during their lifetime.
